The Mandala Peace Quilt is the second in a series of community collaborative quilt projects facilitated by Helema Kadir, commissioned by Omega Institute. The word mandala comes from Sanskrit, meaning “disk”. Traditionally mandalas are circular, symmetrical images that can be used for meditative and spiritual purposes. Helema Kadir’s interpretation for the Mandala Peace Quilt was to create peace mandalas that invoke a meditative and spiritual experience without relying on traditional mandala forms. The success of this quilt is seen by the diverse art work in each block: some being circular and similar in nature to a traditional mandala, while others are more subjective, exploding with shapes and colors that evoke a human desire for peace but depart from any traditional mandala form. Also, the fabric lining between the 64 blocks on this quilt unfold the colors of the rainbow, offering that sense of hope for which the rainbow stands. This work asks us to explore spiritual dimensions of making peace on Earth, while allowing freedom enough to transcend the limitation of spiritual forms.
